Instructor:

Jennifer Snippen, MA RN BSN F-ABMDI

Jennifer is a Board Certified Fellow with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. She a registered nurse with extensive critical care/trauma experience and past Chief Deputy Medical Examiner for Linn and Benton Counties in Oregon. She is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Lane Community College Science Department where she teaches Human Anatomy and Physiology.  Jennifer received a Master’s in Applied Biomedical Anthropology from Oregon State University with a minor focus on Physiology. Her thesis research project was a multijurisdictional study of law enforcement experiences related to infant death investigations.  

Brief Overview:

Students will learn about current best practice guidelines - and specific challenges faced by law enforcement - in the setting of infant death investigation.  Critical investigation components will be discussed in detail using a case-review approach and a focus will be placed on the value of a diligent and thoughtful approach to these complex and challenging cases.  Students will be introduced to practical infant growth & development considerations as well as the importance of medical & social history acquisition.  The roles of both patrol first responders and detectives will be addressed.  Collaboration with EMS, medical staff and medical examiner representatives will be emphasized.  Overall, a focus on practical application is emphasized.
