Instructor:

Joe Miller, Joe is a 20+ year veteran of a large city police department in Oregon. Joe has served primarily in the patrol division with collateral duties in crisis negotiation, civil disturbance, civil investigation, and defensive tactics cadre. In addition, Joe is a long-time adjunct instructor at a local community college and at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). Joe’s experience as an officer and trainer show in his ability to mix information, experience and humor in the right combination to keep attendees interested and involved.      

Brief Overview:

As first responders, we understand “Ask, Tell, Make”.  What about those situations that represent a risk to the subject or others that should be mitigated?  How about situations that would benefit from additional time to get tactical and/or command elements into place, to give the victims the best possible chance of the best possible outcome? Maybe you’re the only one responding and you want to be confident your knowledge of de-escalation is on par with your tactical resolution skill set. Attendees of Crisis Communication for First Responders will leave the class with a practical set of skills that they can use to:            

  • De-escalate or stabilize angry/violent behavior
  • Establish meaningful dialog with the threat
  • Word choice/emotional control tactics
  • Handle request/demands/deadlines the threat gives you
  • Establish a therapeutic rapport
  • Gather meaningful intelligence from the threat/victims
  • Up-Channel vital information for commanders/decision makers
