Jennifer Schindell, RN, F-ABMDI.

Jennifer is a Board Certified Fellow with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators. She is also a registered nurse with extensive critical care/trauma experience in Alaska and Idaho. Schindell is a past instructor for the Linn Benton CC Criminal Justice program, the Oregon State Medicolegal Death Investigator Program & the Oregon State University eCampus.   She is currently a Medical Anthropology Master’s Student at Oregon State University. Her thesis research project is a multijurisdictional study of law enforcement experiences related to infant death investigation.

Brief Overview:

Course Objectives:

In the morning session instructors emphasize the importance of collaboration in strangulation recognition and response.  Accordingly, this presentation is designed & intended for attendance by law enforcement, prosecutors, EMS & ER staff. This training begins with a discussion of asphyxiation & a review of basic medical terminology. Anatomical structures are then reviewed along with basic physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular & central nervous systems.  With this foundation established, an explicit discussion of the physiological significance of strangulation is offered.  Investigative techniques are then discussed with rationale provided for each line of inquiry.  A discussion of photodocumentation, body maps, & physical assessment tools will be included. Case reviews are provided to include recreational events, assaults, homicides, suicides, & accidents.  Photographs & videos are utilized extensively. 

The afternoon session will include 2 in depth strangulation case presentations that will demonstrate the morning sessions importance as it applies to criminal investigations.
